Economic & Business Research Resources

The Hawai‘i Innovation Assets Report highlights the richness and diversity of the state’s innovation economy. The state has a strong foundation in research through the discoveries and innovation activity of the University of Hawai‘i and a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related educational programs promoting and supporting the growth of a technically skilled workforce.

The University of  Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO) conducts rigorous, independent economic research on issues that are both central to Hawaii and globally relevant. We distribute our analysis widely to promote research driven dialogue and inform public and private sector decision making in Hawaii.

Hawaii Innovation Matters, an interactive dashboard developed by UHERO Analytics in partnership with DevLeague and with support from Hawaii Business Roundtable, is now available on the UHERO website. Innovation is the key to regional growth and prosperity. To better understand Hawaii’s progress in developing a vibrant innovation-based economy, this dashboard tracks key innovation assets and outcomes, and when possible, allows for comparison with other states and counties.

Small Business Administration reports that America’s 25.8 million small businesses employ more than 50 percent of the private workforce, generate more than half of the nation’s gross domestic product, and are the principal source of  new jobs in the U.S. economy”  (Source:  U.S. Department of Labor).

Veterans’ Resources — “According to a May 2011 study from the SBA Office of Advocacy.  In 2007 (the latest data available from the U.S. Census Bureau), veterans owned 2.4 million businesses, or 9 percent of all businesses nationwide, generating $1.2 trillion in receipts and employing nearly 5.8 million people.”
